Attention Ice Hockey Moms, Soccer Moms, Football Moms, LaCrosse Moms, Field Hockey Moms and all other sports Moms (and of course Dads!):

How many times have you been to the pro shops, Modell’s, Sports Authority, Dick’s or any other sports shop you can think of and purchased the BEST equipment you can get for your kid? Have you ever sent your kid out there without their goalie mask or shoulder pads for football, or perhaps their shin pads for soccer (forgive me if this is wrong but I’m an Ice Hockey Mom, not sure if this is a soccer thing) or maybe it’s the La Crosse helmet you may consider sending your kid out there without. NO! I didn’t think you would send them out there without protection.

My point? Well if we care about buying our kids the most expensive and impressive equipment so that they can be on top of their game, what about protecting their eyes? Their eyes? Yes….their eyes! Not many parents think about sports protective eye wear for kids. What is sport protective eye wear? These are protective eyeglasses which you can get in your child’s Rx which they can wear during sports. And if you think wearing contact lenses are safe for their eyes, think again! How many times have you read or heard about a kid getting poked in the eye during a basketball game? Or maybe you heard of the neighbor’s kid who was hit on the face and his eye was injured by a foul ball. Then again, you may have seen a kid at soccer practice getting hit on the face by a ball while wearing his street frames (that would be their regular glasses).

What to do, what to do! I’ll tell you some more before telling you what to do. As parents we need to make sure we protect our children’s eyes at play, while in school and while at home and I suggest you do some research about ‘sports protective eye wear’ and NOT wait until your child becomes a statistic! Have you seen the movie “Dodgeball” where the geeky guy is wearing those big clunky eyeglasses to protect his eyes? Well if you have, rest assured there are far more ‘cooler looking’ styles for kids nowadays, and if you haven’t seen the movie…rent it…it is MAD funny!

So I say to all parents who want their kids to be on top of their games, read up on protecting your children’s eyes before they head back to school and sports and if you want more information on where to find the right product to protect their eyes, go to:

If not sure what you’re looking for or what I am talking about….speak to your eye care professional, he or she should guide you in the right direction.  And if you’re still NOT sure what to do or where to go, send me an email or comment, I will definitely steer you in the right direction to get the right protection for your child’s eye.  After all, seeing is believing and we need to protect our child’s eyes now…not after they have been hurt!

Getting the right protection for your child’s eyes is just as important as getting the best equipment you can buy. Let’s face it, an injury is preventable with the right equipment….Sports Protective Eye Wear should be on your ‘equipment’ list as well.
